Rick Boyer

artist statement

My name is Rick Boyer and I am a photographer who tries to go beyond the expected. The images before you are from my most recent works. Recent relocation to the city from the countryside of Chester and Berks counties has encouraged a new burst of inspiration to visually capture my new surroundings with a unique perspective. My formal education in graphic design has influenced me to create photography with strong linear composition, fusing together photography and design by using repetitive elements paired with recognizable subjects shot with an appealing photographic style.

My inspiration stems from several of my favorite art movements; Impressionism, Pop-Art, and Surrealism. In Impressionism, art expresses the characteristics of light over time. Pop-Art uses highly recognizable, sometimes commercial images. Surrealism relies on the distortion of these recognizable scenes or objects. Photography defined is simply "drawing with light." All of these ideals are expressed in these digital photographs.

I wanted to put a different spin on many of the well-known Philadelphia scenes. The scenes range from the Art Museum, Boat House Row, cityscapes, and others. There has been no computer enhancement to these images. All effects were achieved by using traditional photography techniques - movement and extended exposure. My hope is that I have created art that is aesthetically pleasing, unique, fun, and will endure as an intriguing conversation piece for years to come.

biography

Rick Boyer is an up and coming photographer. He is a country boy with high aspirations. Rick grew up just outside of Birdsboro in picturesque Berks County; just a stone's throw from the Daniel Boone Homestead and French Creek State Park. Many days were spent trekking through their gorgeous landscapes. However, he was always magnetized by the nearby city of Philadelphia. He knew one day he would explore its landscapes, just in a slightly different manner. Over the past five years, Rick has resided in West Lawn, Williamsport, Kennett Square and currently Manayunk. Each of these locations provided its own unique backdrop to strengthen Rick's creative eye (Longwood Gardens, historical victorian Williamsport, quaint West Reading and now the many cityscapes of Philadelphia).
